Pardon Our Dust As We Disqus

Pardon Our Dust As We Disqus

disqus1 150x150 Pardon Our Dust As We DisqusJust a quick note to let you know this blog is undergoing some renovations. I’ve just installed Disqus (pronounced “discuss”) comment system, which will replace the native WordPress commenting system.

It takes a while for the system to import all the comments from WordPress — it’s about 70% done, now — and it should be all back to normal soon. Fingers crossed.

Why am I doing this?

I’ve been investigating several commenting systems, including WordPress’ own, Intense Debate. And Disqus appears to be the winner in many of the reviews I’ve read. I’ve tested it on some of my non-public blogs and it works quite well.

This system allows you to track comments, converse using threaded replies, rate comments, add links to commentator profiles, and comment by logging into Twitter, Facebook, or Disqus Connect, or simply as a guest.

Comments are still moderated as before, so your comment won’t show up automatically. If you notice anything “wiggy,” please comment here. The complete transition, Disqus advises me, should be completed by day’s end. Thanks for bearing with me.

I had try Intense Debate before, and I doesn't like it very much, may be I will try to use Disqus, but does Disqus had a different color for author comment?
  • Does mine show up differently? By the way, you can also manipulate the CSS. I've done so on this blog. I've changed it to look like my blog -- using Disqus' own CSS wrappers.

Also, Disqus told me they will also add external CSS modifiable styles. Woohoo!
  • By the way, if you have any specific changes you want implented, simply ask Disqus (@giannii). They are very supportive and flexible. They're making a few changes for me. ;)
  • I think Disqus is going to be the next best thing in commenting. It's great at stopping spam !

Big fan of Disqus for comments. I've noticed it is being adopted in various areas of interest. I like that it can set one cookie and recognize a user even when I visit completely different sites. It's a big hassle to log in or create new log ins when I just want to post a short comment.
  • Hi Michel,

I like Disqus - but I guess you must forgo the benefits of the Action Comments plugin to add a checkbox to allow subscribing to your newsletter/feed when making a comment. I don't see the option on your blog, and so I guess it's not compatible with Disqus.

  • A further benefit of Disqus:

Matt Cutts has just revealed that google handles nofollow links differenly than everyone had thought. The long and the short is that having lots of nofollowed links out of your site can hurt the pagerank of your internal pages and maybe even your homepage. Hosting comments on your site does just this - it has lots of nofollowed links to the commenters sites.

But with Disqus, the links are not on your site - they're on the Disqus site and appear on your via javascript.

SEO expert Andy Beard talks about it here: http://andybeard.eu/1904/disqus-why-95-of-blogg...

  • Hey Michel...it looks like a pretty sweet set up. I must admit, I did get a tad confused on how to leave a comment as the comment box appears BEFORE all the comments, instead of the usual after. Of course, I can learn to adjust. :-)
  • Actually, the look and feel is customizable. You can have it at the beginning or the end, or in between.
  • LOL...now you're getting complicated. I like things out of the box...anything else, becomes a challenge.

But that IS pretty cool for those (the many) who like to fiddle with things.
  • Disqus is a quality commenting system. I'm glad that you guys have decided to go this route.
  • Disqus is Great! Currently there are some "comment plugins" which can let a page have function of comment. The best one I know is Disqus With greater control and commenter profiles. this plugins is really cool, I love it. Thanks for Sharing..
  • You had indeed made a right choice on choosing disqus, Disqus is awesome especially its networking features
  • I like this and wonder have you noted either an increase or decrease in comments? Also, any news if Robert Plank's Action Comments will work with this?
  • No, Robert's script doesn't work. But I am working on something to customize it, though. Will keep you posted.
  • Michael.
I'm just learning about Disqus, but I'm early in the learning curve, so not much to comment yet. I'm building some blogs (2 so far), and I'm sure that as the work-load grows, I will need the help. Will be keeping myself informed.

    Thanks,
    Anthony
  • If Disqus and Intense Debate could work like Facebook Connect, it would be wonderful. I do not want Disqus logo on my site. I want it in the credits of my site in the domain section. I prefer my own blog comment look.

My issue with this is to try to make it more like social media where you can choose how you want to connect and go from there. I had to sign up for Disqus just to comment on others blogs.
  • Thanks, Michel. I am installing your suggested plug-in and look forward to using it. I hope you can figure out the Action Comment plug-in soon, otherwise I will miss using it on my website. Keep up the great work.

  • I've been using Disqus for a couple of months now, very happy with it.

  • I'm using this Disqus Comments tool also, its really easy and customized, i loved it! Nice tools for blogger, especially it has a signed "D" hahaha ^_^ Cheeerrs!
  • It was my understanding that he current version of the plugin shows the comments via javascript? I know in the past versions of the plugin Scott Jangro hacked it to remove nofollow.
