Copywriting Champion of The World?

James BrauschInteresting event going on at James Brausch’s blog. He did a contest a few weeks ago asking people to submit their headlines for a software he created, which he would split-test and post rankings from time to time.

I own Glyphius, the software in question, and decided not only to participate in the contest for fun, but also to use Glyphius as well to help me.

Each and every week, Brausch reported his findings, which he based on visitor value. Four times now over the past month, the top 5 headlines were posted, including the names of the submitters, the copy of their headlines that won, and the resulting visitor value for each headline.

My name NEVER came up. And understandably, there are some pretty good copywriters in that contest. Some of their headlines are fantastic. Personally, I didn’t participate to win. I did it for fun, and to prove the power of Glyphius more than anything. (Not to mention helping James out, who’s a friend and a fanatical tester, too.)

Well, I got a little surprise this morning…

    I’m going to echo my thoughts on James’ blog here, for posterity. I think it’s important to note how specifically I used Glyphius, which is not how some people do.

    I remember my score on Glyphius was something closer to over 600. And apparently, my headline scored less than some other headlines in the test.

    But rather than writing a whole bunch of headlines and then scoring them in Glyphius, but used it to validate and improve an existing one. Essentially, I started by writing the headline first. (It was close to the same headline that won.) It expressed the idea I wanted to convey. And then I changed words around to get to the highest score I could.

    So rather than using Glyphius with a bunch of headlines trying to see which one scored best, I simply came up with the best headline I knew beforehand, then resorted to Glyphius to, as I said in my headline, “validate it mathematically.”

    As commentor “Matt” said so eloquently, “There’s still a lot to be said for capturing the right message to market match. Fortin’s headline is a compelling synopsis of what Glyphius is all about.”

    I’m not sure if James agrees or not, and I’m still sure there are better headlines than mine (the tests, according to James, are still too early). But that’s the way *I* use Glyphius and why I recommend it so much. It’s a tool to help perfecting the job, not one to substitute it.

    Good ol’ copywriting skills goes a long way, regardless of technology.

    It gives you a postive percentage for certain keywords.

    For example…
    “FREE Lose Money Secrets”
    gets a 100% rating.

    And
    “Copy Computer Created Garbage
    And Lose Money Immediately”
    also gets 100%

    I wonder how those headlines go in Glyphius.

    I think the tool is great and as Michel says it’s going to be far more effective if you know your prospects intimately and you create headlines first then tweak them in Glyphius.
